The Best Time to Visit Sequoia National Park
Wondering about the best time to visit Sequoia National Park? While any time is a good time to plan to visit Sequoia, this guide will share the ideal time to visit (in our opinion!)
We’ll break down:
- Weather in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park (so you know what to pack)
- Average daily and monthly visitors (so you know the best month to visit the park!)
- And recommend the best time to explore Sequoia National Park (hint: maybe not summer)
The truth is that the best time to go to Sequoia is any time. This park is home to some of the largest trees in the world. There are quite literally hundreds of giant sequoia trees spread within the park. We hope you feel inspired to plan a trip to Sequoia National Park!
Why You Should Go to Sequoia National Park
Whether you are planning to spend one day in Sequoia or an entire weekend, there are numerous things to do in Sequoia. You can plan time to visit General Sherman or visit the giant forest museum. There are plenty of hiking trails and scenic drives throughout the park as well. What you will marvel at, however, are the giant sequoias. To this day, this park gets near the top of my rankings for most favorite place to visit.
What is the Best Month to Visit Sequoia National Park?
The ideal time to go to Sequoia National Park is in September.
The summer visitor season has peaked and crowds have thinned out. Park roads are still open, the weather will be crisp during the day, and the fall foliage will provide some incredible scenic drives. Since winter has yet to fully arrive, much of the park areas are still open! You will be able to explore the sequoia groves in peak fall splendor! September is a great time to travel to Sequoia National Park.
What is the Worst Month to Visit Sequoia National Park?
While there is no such thing as a true worst time, there are less-than-ideal times to visit National Parks.
In our opinion, the worst month to visit Sequoia National Park is in July.
Hotter than average temperatures in the park, more crowds, and the heightened risk for wildfires, make July a more challenging time to visit. June through August is already the peak National Park season across the country. The same is true for Sequoia and Kings Canyon.
THAT BEING SAID – we took a weekend roadtrip to Sequoia National Park IN JULY. It was still lovely. It was still awesome. And it was the only time we had overlapping vacation. If you want to get into the national park to avoid crowds, it is best to get there early in the morning or stay a bit later into the evening!
But I think it was like 100º when we visited…And we didn’t love feeling hot and crowded!
